The incident took place around 6 p.m. Thursday when the teen forced his way into the home on Shelton Road in Trumbull and attacked the 72-year-old homeowner for no reason, said Trumbull Police Capt. Keith Golding.

The homeowner, fearing for his family’s safety, shot the teen once, with his legally owned handgun, striking him in the abdomen, Golding said.

Responding officers treated the teen at the scene before he was transported to Bridgeport Hospital by ambulance. He is currently in stable condition, police said.

Just prior to the shooting, police received several 911 calls from residents of the Shelton Road neighborhood, reporting that the teen was running into the street attempting to stop passing cars and banging on several doors.

The teen was later identified as a nearby resident who suffers from a mental health disability that displays erratic, and sometimes violent behavior, Golding said. He may also have been affected by the severe weather at the time of the incident.

The resident who discharged the gun was cooperative and remained at the scene.

Detectives conducted the preliminary investigation, no charges were filed for either of the men involved at this time, Golding said.
